MATERIALS + CARE

brass

Brass and bronze are blends of copper, along with tin or zinc. These materials have been used in jewelry and art for hundreds of years due to its affordability, durability, and resemblance to gold.

Over time, brass naturally will oxidize and form a protective layer. Don't worry! This is normal, and many people prefer the look of aged or tarnished metal. If you would like to maintain the ‘sparkle’ of your brass jewelry, polish with the provided cloth. With use, this cloth will turn black  - don't throw it away or wash it.

Everyone has different body chemistry, and skin may react to metals due to natural pH, lotions and perfumes, etc. Commonly, people report a faint discoloring of the skin after wearing brass. This is simply a response to the copper present, and can be removed with soap and water. To avoid this, apply a thin coat of clear nail polish on the brass where it has contact with your skin.

To maintain your brass, remove items while sleeping, and keep your jewelry away from moisture and chemicals while wearing and storing.  It is recommended to polish your jewelry with the provided 'Sunshine polishing Cloth' to restore the polish, and follow with cleaning in warm soap and water, and wipe completely dry.

gold-filled

A solid layer of gold mechanically bonded to a core of either brass, copper, or sterling silver. At least 5% of the total weight of the item is karat gold. Provides wearability closest to solid gold, and can last for decades with proper care.

Keep your jewelry away from harsh chemicals and excessive exposure to moisture. To clean, use a soft brush and warm soapy water; taking care to avoid pearls, stones, and thread.

hand-knotted strands

All knotted strands are strung with nylon blend thread and longevity as the ultimate goal, but please take care to follow all care instructions, and not stretch or snag the piece, as it is not indestructible. All clasps and hardware are either gold-filled, or solid brass, sterling silver, or gold. Please consult the specific listing for details.

Most importantly - avoid moisture, products and chemicals, as it will damage stones and thread.

You may wish to clean the clasp and surrounding metal hardware periodically. Use a soft brush and warm soapy water; taking care to avoid pearls, stones, and thread.

With normal wear, some stretching of the thread is to be expected. After many years, you may wish to re-string your strand - please contact rbd for information.
